Insanity workout review
I spent many years trying to lose weight. I tried many different exercise regimes, including running every night, weight training, high impact aerobics and swimming. I spent a fortune on gym memberships, which was a waste of money because I never found time to go to the gym. What I needed was a plan, a schedule put in place to follow every day. Given the high pressure of my job in an advertising firm, blocking out time to go to the gym or swim every day just wasn’t working.
My body had become accustomed to being lazy and what I needed was an exercise program that gave me an intense cardiovascular workout and was physically demanding. My half-hearted attempts at walking or running every evening and doing a few sit-ups while watching TV just was not enough. Without a solid plan that I would be motivated to stick to, I wasn’t getting anywhere.
I had to get my body used to high activity again by way of an intense, fast-paced, cardiovascular workout. I needed aerobics that had a much higher impact. When I discovered the Beachbody’s Insanity workout program, I was cautious at first as this workout was really full-on, but I bought it, and I don’t regret it. I lost the weight and gained well toned muscles that felt stronger. I told myself to stop making excuses and get this workout plan of mine started. When summer arrived, I was walking on the beach, wearing just a pair of shorts.
The Insanity workout is extreme and physically demanding on your body, after my very first workout session I was stiff and sore. The best thing for stiff and sore muscles is to exercise them. Your body will adjust and this does not take long.
Who can use Insanity?
The Insanity workout is not for everyone. I am reasonably fit and can run up the stairs without puffing and panting. A certain level of fitness is required to do this workout. If you are very unfit, then you won’t make it through the 63 day program.
Beginners should start with something less demanding and anyone who has a medical condition or injuries should not use it. Always consult your doctor before beginning any fitness program or change in diet.
My doctor was very supportive about this workout program and she encouraged me to go for it. She is my family doctor and because my brother died of a heart attack at the age of only 41, she had been on my back for years to watch my diet and start exercising. On my 30th birthday, I decided enough was enough. I did not want to suffer the same fate as my older brother, so I bought the Insanity workout program and I am so glad that I did. So let’s talk about what this program can do for you.
Overview of the Insanity workout
The Beachbody Insanity workout comes with ten DVDs which contain the workouts and the exercises you will be doing each day. The workout claims to tone up your muscles, reduce weight and get you looking fabulous in approximately 60 days. The program also claims that you will start seeing results fairly soon after you begin the workout program. You will feel fitter, stronger and all within about ten days.
I began seeing results after around ten days, and it helped my motivation to keep at it. I knew if I did not put everything into this workout, I was not going to achieve the results I wanted. Having the discipline and commitment to stay on the program for 60 days is really important.
What method of training Insanity is based on?
Insanity uses a system called maximum interval training, (MIT) which was designed by Shaun T, the figurehead of Insanity. MIT works in a completely different way to standard interval training. MIT is the total opposite to the above method of training. With MIT, Shaun demonstrates an intense workout, with short rests in-between. The notion behind each exercise is to do as many repetitions as you can, and push your body as hard as possible. What occurs is that your muscle tissue breaks down and that is the point, when the muscle tissues heal in three to four days, your muscles are stronger and the toning process of your body begins.
Taking it easy and not pushing so hard is a mistake with this program. You will not get the desired result for your muscle tissue. Shaun calls this “running to stand still”, which means that if you take it easy, you will get a great cardio workout, but will not achieve muscle tone or strength. I knew this, but it was Shaun who encouraged me to push myself to the limit. There was no way I was going to be able to ignore this annoying exercise instructor on my television, even turning off the TV did not work, I knew I had to get off my backside and try harder, or my efforts would be wasted. Shaun’s ability to get inside your head is amazing, and he does it from a TV screen. I felt bad for being slack and this motivated me to try harder.
What do you get with the Insanity workout?
My Insanity workout kit contained the standard ten DVDs. I also received bonus DVDs with exercises that focus on the maximum interval training. The extra DVDs were not used in the 60 day program. But once I was through the workout program, I tried these DVDs and found them to be great in testing my fitness and how far I had come. The average workout time was about 45 minutes.
My Insanity workout review would not be complete without mentioning the bonuses. Remember, you might not receive the bonus items if you purchase this program from a third party website. The Insanity workout program kit comes with an elite nutrition plan, so that you can prepare a suitable diet for the intense workouts you will be doing six days per week. The seventh day is referred to as a recovery day.
You also get an Insanity calendar that you can attach to the wall of your workout space. You will be able to see at a glance which workout you need to do on any given day and pencil in your rest day. You will get a fitness guide too, which helps you to remain fit long after you have completed the 60 day program.
The most important bonus was the online access. I found information and experts who know all there is to know about what workouts are better than others. You will also be able to connect via forums with other people who are doing the Insanity workout program or have completed it. Valuable advice and support can be obtained from these online resources.
Dietary tips while using the Insanity workout program
During my workout I always had a bottle of water with me, so I could sip some water during a rest break to stop dehydration. Don’t drink too much or you will probably end up with a stitch or stomach cramp. I drank plenty of water once I was finished working out. I basically had a full water bottle with me at all times so I would stay hydrated.
My diet did not change much while I was on the Insanity program, but I did make the effort to eat a lot of salads, lean meats and less fatty and sugary foods. It is important to have the necessary nutrients in your body, so that your muscles heal properly and you have enough energy to keep up with the pace of your workouts.
While you are participating in the Insanity workout program, you will need to be eating plenty of protein. Protein helps build up muscles and tones your body, I invested in some powdered protein drinks that body builders use. They are quick and easy to prepare, and act as a meal replacement.
I also mostly follow the diet that is included with the insanity workout program, but I slipped occasionally. I do enjoy my comfort foods, and the Insanity diet allows for this. I did not make it a habit however, because I knew enough about nutrition that if I ate junk food all the time my muscles would suffer and my workout would not be as effective as it could be.
I ate a lot of protein in the form of eggs, most meats, chicken and fish, not to mention many vegetable products, such as kale, beans, soy beans, and soy milk. I also drank the powered drinks at work when I had no time to go out to get lunch.
What results Insanity delivers
The result I wanted to achieve was weight loss, the muscle tone and strength I achieved was a bonus. On the internet you will find many videos that people have made that show the results they achieved with this program and there is a link to a YouTube video further down this page. I wish that I had thought to do this. You will see the physical results a man and woman achieved with the Insanity workout program.
All I can say is if I had not bought this program, I would still be overweight. My goal was not about toning my muscles or building strength, however I did wish to be fitter than I was. The Insanity workout program delivered what I needed.
Some reviewers commented that they noticed results within a week. I noticed results in the first ten days. I also could not believe how good I felt once I had recovered from a workout. Probably those endorphins the fitness experts talk about. In short, the results you can expect to gain from the Insanity workout program are better muscle tone and strength, weight loss, an athletic build, cardio strength, endurance and more strength in your abs, chest, triceps, quads and gluts.

Tips on surviving the 60 day Insanity workout
I was pretty sure I would not survive this workout. In fact, during my first couple of workouts I thought that Shaun T was trying to kill me. Insanity is intense, challenging, extremely demanding and painful, and I remembered what people say about pain: “No pain, no gain.” I was lucky to have a good friend who did this program with me. She motivated me and I motivated her. If that is not possible for you, rest assured that Shaun T will motivate you to keep going. He is very good at this.
Ask your friends to be your cheerleaders and to help motivate you and support you while you complete the program. A real friend will do this for you. A great way to survive this program is to enlist your family and kids as your cheerleaders. Or, if you are single, enlist your extended family.
Follow the recommended Insanity workout program diet or follow your own healthy eating regime, ensure your plan takes into account what your body needs to endure the intense workouts. Get plenty of sleep or this will affect your energy levels. This might lead you into the temptation to skip a workout.
Lastly, remember how great you felt when you finished your workout the day before. After you recovered and took a shower, you felt great. Keep this in mind and pay attention to the results you are getting from this program. You will do better if someone is pushing you to succeed. Also, look online for some groups or forums where people gather who will support you.
The Insanity workout schedule
I received a calendar with the Insanity kit that acts as your schedule for the entire 60 days. You might have to print it out from the Beachbody website. Attach it to the wall in your workout room and it will tell you which workout you are doing on a day to day basis and what number DVD you need to set up.
On rest day, you will be encouraged to do gentle stretching exercises, which aids in healing your muscles and encouraging more flexibility within your joints and ligaments.
Use the schedule to block out your rest day, that’s what I did. There is a recovery week in the middle of the program where you still workout, but it is not as intense. 37 minutes is how long these sessions go for. It took me nine weeks in total to finish the Insanity workout program.
Which program is better, Insanity or P90X Workout?
Critics and reviewers have mostly called it a draw when comparing Insanity and P90X Workout, which is also made by Beachbody. To share my opinion on this program verses Insanity, I had to do some research on what others are saying.
Reviewers mostly said that they are excellent products and will deliver the results you want. The reviewers all say that the cardiovascular workout is what makes Insanity stand out over P90X Workout. Users of Insanity commented that it was fun to do the workouts, whereas P90X Workout was not as fun to use. People generally won’t stick to a workout plan that is boring.
One reviewer said to keep in mind the type of workout and results you want. If bulking up is the plan, getting fit and improving strength, the P90X Workout is the program they should buy. If someone is after a weight loss program and wants to tone muscles and build strength, then Insanity is the product for them. A friend told me that if you want a high impact cardio workout and a program that is focused on strength training and bulking up then they should get both products.
Where can someone buy the Insanity workout program?
I bought the Insanity Workout program from Amazon.com. This program is not overly expensive and a great idea for a Christmas gift for yourself or someone you know who wants to lose weight and get fit.
Here is the Amazon link to purchase if you are based in the US
I highly recommend this program despite my negativity before I started it. I have lost weight, more weight than was my original goal. I have also toned up my body and become fitter than I have ever been. The Insanity workout program delivered what I needed, so there is no reason it won’t do the same for you.
The fitness game is a popular one because so many people these days are committed to good health, nutrition and weight loss and this program is one of the best ones out there.
