Ideascrunch had the exclusive privilege to an e-interview with Keith Tan (Head Strategy) of Start Now on what it takes to be a sociopreneur in Singapore!
What is your company about?
We are in the business of mobilizing people, inspiring people, helping people. “Start Now” encapsulates that methodology of call to action, connecting good people to good causes. We cater to everyone in Singapore and we provide opportunities to corporates and individuals to do good by volunteering while having fun.
What is the greatest thing about your company?
We sell something intangible and yet being able to give satisfaction to an individual. Our “product” brings people together and result in a greater good to everyone.
How did you come up with the name for your company?
We believe that many people would actually love to give back to the society in one way or another. We can present these opportunities to these people and encourage them to Start Now. There is never a better time to start than now.
How did you get funded initially?
What time do you usually start work each day?
Work is part of my life; It is not a separate entity. Therefore, I can start work at 7am or 11am. Sometimes, I also have to stay awake up to 3am to finish what I have to do.
When is the last time you went on vacation in 3 years and where did you go?
I went to Phuket in May 2014. I was very relaxed. Replying emails by the beach is relaxing.
What is the very first thing you do at work every day?
I drink coffee.
Do you work from home, office or a cafe?
All of the above.
Where do you see your company in 5 Years?
How many people did you start the company with and how many people work for you now?
I started the company with one other person and now we have 5 people.
What’s the top 5 Struggles you face as an Entrepreneur?
How many failed startups were you involved in before this?
We successfully exited a corporate gift and printing business for a low 6 figure sum. We involved in one failed training business and another failed event business.
Are you a coffee person? What brand do your drink?
Yes. I drink all sorts of coffee. I am a coffee addict.
At which point will you consider yourself a successful entrepreneur?

Don’t be naive. Your idea sucks.
